Composite fillings or “white” fillings are used to protect against tooth decay in a small to medium-sized dental cavity. White fillings work just like traditional dental amalgam or “silver” fillings, but are made of a mixture of resin and tiny ground glass particles to create a more natural tooth appearance. White fillings can be used for cosmetic reasons, to replace old silver fillings, or if there are concerns about the mercury content of silver fillings as scientists agree that dental amalgam fillings can leach mercury into the mouth.
