Oral Sedation
HomeSedation
Oral sedation is a safe and effective method used in dentistry to help patients feel calm and relaxed during their procedures. By taking a prescribed pill prior to your appointment, you’ll experience reduced anxiety and may even feel drowsy or relaxed, though you’ll still be awake and able to respond. Oral sedation is ideal for patients with dental anxiety or those undergoing lengthy treatments. It’s simple and ensures a more comfortable experience. Common medications for oral sedation include: 1. Benzodiazepines like diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), and triazolam (Halcion), which are well-known for their calming effects. 2. Antihistamines such as hydroxyzine (Vistaril), which can also cause drowsiness and relaxation. 3. Non-benzodiazepine sedatives like zolpidem (Ambien) in certain cases, though less common. Key Points • Effectiveness: Typically takes 30–60 minutes to start working, depending on the medication. • Monitoring: Though patients can respond to instructions, it’s essential to have someone with the patient, as they should not drive post-procedure. • Duration: Effects can last for several hours after the procedure, depending on the medication type and dosage. • Safety: It’s usually safe but can cause side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, or mild amnesia.
